01Proposition
What DirectGay does.
DirectGay is a place for gay and bi men to communicate, connect, exchange useful information and discover places and experiences. Its promise: “Find people who understand you, and share the life you want to build.”
In its own words, it “isn’t a hookup app, and it isn’t a highlight reel. It’s closer to the best group chat you’ve ever been in, just easier to search.” Community conversations sit next to practical guides, so a question about a city can lead straight to its neighborhoods, bars, stays and events.
02The problem
The customer and the need.
The customer problem
Gay and bi men looking for friendship, advice and good information are poorly served. Dating apps are built for one thing, broad social platforms bury specific questions, and city and travel information is scattered across outdated lists and listings shaped by paid placement.
The questions are often practical: how to make gay friends as an adult, how to come out later in life, which neighborhood suits a move, which events are worth a trip. And they deserve answers from people who share the situation.
Who it serves
DirectGay is designed for gay men looking for connection, practical guidance, entertainment and examples of lives worth wanting. Bisexual men are just as welcome, and so is anyone still figuring out how they identify or how out they want to be.
It designs around shared needs rather than a demographic: belonging without performing, friendship through shared interests, help with dating and relationships, reassurance about timelines, positive examples, and humor and culture. It never assumes a particular age, body type, income, look or lifestyle.
03Product
The product in use.
Communication and community. Thirty-one boards for life and advice, hobbies, culture, travel and nightlife, and individual cities, with threaded replies and votes. Weekly rituals such as Monday Wins and Advice Hour, a question of the day, and member profiles with an illustrated avatar.
Discovery. City guides for fifteen US cities, covering neighborhoods, bars, health, making friends, Pride and moving tips; practical guides on friendship, coming out, dating and travel; a bar finder that sorts by distance on your own phone; 108 stays across 27 destinations with “no affiliate links, no paid placement”; an events calendar whose confirmed dates can be added to your own calendar; and an hourly LGBTQ news feed where any headline can start a discussion.
How it works for a customer
- 01
Find advice
Ask on a board such as Friends, Dating, Moving Cities or a city board, and hear from people who share your situation.
- 02
Meet people
Connect through public threads: a hiking group, weekend plans, a city board. There is no private messaging.
- 03
Explore a destination
Open the city guide or bar list from the same board, or find bars near you, sorted on your phone.
- 04
Plan an experience
Check stays and events for a destination, and add confirmed events to your calendar.

04Opportunity and technology
Why it can win.
The opportunity
Community and discovery reinforce each other here: conversations bring people back, and trustworthy guides give those conversations somewhere to go. The audience is large, underserved by general platforms, and travels and goes out with intent.
We think a product that is useful before it is busy, and trusted because it says what it has checked, can become the default place this audience starts.
Technology
DirectGay is a fast, server-rendered web app on Cloudflare’s global network, installable on a phone, with a public API for developers. Sign-in uses a six-digit code sent by email, with no password. Personalization and exact location stay on the device: the “near me” list is sorted on your phone, and the server only ever sees a city. An hourly job gathers news from thirteen LGBTQ outlets.
05Trust
Privacy, moderation and trustworthy information
Privacy. Members appear only by username; an email address is used only to send sign-in codes and is “never shown to anyone.” DirectGay “never tries to work out whether you’re out.” Exact location is never sent to the server, analytics keep no IP addresses or user IDs, and Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control are honored.
Moderation. Eight house rules, starting from “Be the kind of guy you’d want to meet here,” include never out anyone, keep it safe for work, and adults only (18+). There is no gatekeeping or masc/femme policing. A moderator reads every report, posts with several reports are hidden automatically, and moderators can remove, lock and ban.
Trustworthy information. The calendar is checked against official sites, and every bar and stay carries a note of its source and the month it was checked. Venues that close are removed, and a stay is labeled gay-owned only when the property says so itself.
06Where it is now
Stage and milestones.
DirectGay is in its launch stage. The discovery side is live and maintained: city guides, bars, stays, the events calendar and the news feed, with venues checked against current sources in October 2026. The community boards are open and new, and the first members are joining.
